Background

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a not-for-profit institution that exhibits, collects, preserves, and researches contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora; conceives and hosts international exhibitions; develops supporting educational, discursive and enriching programmes; encourages intercultural understanding; and strives for access for all. The museum’s galleries feature rotating, temporary exhibitions with a dedicated space for the permanent collection. The institution also includes the Centre for Art Education, the Centre for Moving Image, and a Project Space for emerging artists. It opened to the public in September 2017.


Job Summary
The main purpose of this position is to provide innovative leadership in developing and executing the museum’s fundraising strategy, with a focus on securing major donations from local and international organisations, foundations, and individuals. The role demands strategic planning, relationship management, and exceptional proposal-writing skills to ensure the long-term growth and sustainability of the organisation’s programmes.

Key Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies to support the organisation's mission and goals
  • Solicit donations from individuals, corporates, trusts, and foundations
  • Build and maintain relationships with current donors to ensure ongoing support
  • Plan and execute fundraising campaigns, including direct mail, online fundraising, special events, and donor cultivation activities
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective donors
  • Work with Communications Team to create compelling donor materials (social media, newsletters, press releases
  • Secure sponsorships/partnerships for events
  • Monitor ROI of each campaign and document lessons learned for improvement
  • Work with internal stakeholders to align funding proposals with programme needs and outcomes
  • Collaborate with Communications for donor visibility and recognition campaign
  • Provide fundraising training or briefing sessions for staff when needed
  • Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to create fundraising materials and messaging
  • Track and report on fundraising activities and results to senior management
  • Represent the organisation at networking events, conferences, and other fundraising opportunities
  • Stay current on fundraising trends and best practices

Qualifications and Experience:
  • Minimum requirement of a Bachelor's degree in a related field (fundraising, development, communications, etc.)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in fundraising or development role
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising campaigns and donor cultivation
Knowledge and Skills
  • A proven record of securing major donations
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, donor management software, and online fundraising platforms
  • Knowledge of database management with exposure to any CRM application and proven ability to use these to develop and manage client relationships
  • Results driven

  • Entrepreneurial thinking and innovative planning and execution in fundraising
  • A seasoned individual with proven leadership skills and an ability to effectively lead a team
